POWER 98.7 is a South African commercial talk radio station that was launched and went on air on 18 June 2013 by its founder and current chairman Given Mkhari.
The Houghton Estate, a Johannesburg-based radio station got the people of Gauteng province and surrounding areas talking since from day one and kudos to Mkhari and his team.
During its launch 9 years ago, the station promised to change the country forever, offering a new platform for individuals to be themselves and participate in the country’s future.
Mkhari said: that the station provides “the forum for regular South Africans to shape South Africa’s future according to their own dreams.”
“South Africans had been outsourcing their lives to our politicians, employers, our husbands and wives for too long and that we needed a space for South Africans to be themselves with no baggage attached.”
The station introduced a lot of big names in South African broadcasting to talk radio, the likes of Azania Mosaka, Chris Vick, the late Bob Mabena, Masechaba Lekalake, Paul Mnisi, Ndumiso Ngcobo, Pabi Moloi, Pof Onkgopotse JJ Tabane and firebrand Eusebius McKaiser. It made some of the names mentioned above big personalities and more mainstream.
Power FM is a sister station of Limpopo-based Capricorn FM and both mediums are majority-owned by MSG Afrika Holdings, of which Mkhari is also the founder and chairperson of the company.
