Former tennis star, entrepreneur and venture capitalist Serena Williams seems enjoying her new life as a mum and businesswoman.
She recently appeared at a TechCrunch Disrupt event to talk about SarenaVentures and some of her strategies and tactics when it comes to investing and building new businesses.
Williams mentioned that they spent most of their time looking at new tech and startups that advance diversity in underserved markets. Those are the areas they invest their money and other resources to grow and nurture those early startup companies.
“We spend a lot of our time in consumer-facing technology because we want to build products for the communities we want to serve…” she said.
“We spend a lot of time on gender and racial equity within the healthcare system, mental health and wellness. These are problems that are facing every community, but especially facing women and people of colour, there are not enough tools and services there for them. So that’s something we’re really focused on.”
The tennis legend she’s married to a businessman, venture capitalist and founder of Reddit Alexis Ohanian. With such union you expect them to talk about business while at home, Williams says that’s not the case for them, they don’t talk about business at home.
“We are both so competitive,” she said. “I’m internally so competitive. You can’t read my face if inside I’m screaming and dying. We don’t want that so we keep it very separate,” said Williams.
