Samsung Electronics unveiled the latest versions of its flagship Galaxy S smartphones on Wednesday which feature enhanced camera functions and a faster processor chip, hoping the upgrade will revive sales after two weak years. The S22 series will directly compete with Apple’s iPhone 13 launched last September. Samsung’s two-track premium mobile strategy has it launching flagship models in the first half of a year and Galaxy Z foldable phones in the second. Aimed at appealing to consumers who are fussy about video and photo quality, Samsung said the S22 phones’ camera offers clearer low light and night shots as well as automatic...

Your Job is Not Safe: Robotics & AI put 800 Million Global Jobs at Risk
Advances in automation technology threaten a significant share of jobs in industries accounting for nearly a quarter of the global workforce, according to Bloomberg Economics’ estimates. In a report released Tuesday, economists Ziad Daoud and Scott Johnson said that could mean as many as 800 million people face a high exposure to the risk of their employment becoming obsolete. The Gulf Cooperation Council, Czech Republic, Slovakia and Japan are most vulnerable to disruption from automation, they wrote. That’s because those countries have a large segment of the workforce in the kind of simple, routine roles that can be most easily...

OPINION | Enemies of Innovation: The enduring saga of Man vs Machine writes Dr. Roche Mamabolo
Artificial Intelligence versus Jobs – the grand showdown between silicon and livelihoods. Prof Calestous Juma‘s insights from Innovation and Its Enemies are like a treasure map to navigate this clash of titans. First off, let’s acknowledge the elephant in the room: AI has the potential to revolutionise industries, streamline processes, and make our lives a futuristic playground. But, and it’s a big but, it also has people clutching their job security blankets like never before. Juma would probably smirk knowingly at this scenario. See, he’d tell us that this resistance isn’t new, it’s an age-old tango between progress and the fear of the...

The power crisis and logistics delays at Durban port are hurting car manufacturing plants and production in South Africa. Volkswagen’s Thomas Schaefer is calling out the government to intervene in fixing Mzansi’s energy, regulatory and logistics problems. Schaefer says he is ‘very worried’ about the future of the company’s operations in this country. “As a result of the power cuts, the Kariega plant has lost 10 days of production this year, equating to 6500 cars,” said Andile Dlamini, Head of Group Communications for Volkswagen SA. “In addition, VW is struggling to receive parts from the ports of Durban and Ngqura,...
Tiger Woods ‘frustrated’ that players were left out of PGA-LIV merger talks
Tiger Woods was left “frustrated” by the lack of player involvement in the PGA Tour’s talks with Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) before their announcement of a framework agreement, the 15-times major winner said on Tuesday. The PGA Tour, Europe-based DP World Tour and the PIF-backed LIV Golf circuit agreed to unify and move forward in a larger commercial business in June after an acrimonious legal battle lasting more than a year. The agreement stunned the golf world and raised concerns in Washington over Saudi Arabia’s role in the deal and the risks posed by a foreign government entity...
REPORT | China’s Nio teams up with Geely on auto battery swapping
Chinese automakers Nio and Zhejiang Geely Holding Group said on Wednesday they had signed a strategic partnership agreement on battery swapping that would see them work together on standards, technology and model development. The deal makes Geely (GEELY.UL), whose brands range from Volvo to Zeekr, the second automaker to sign a battery swapping partnership with Chinese electric vehicle maker Nio. Nio, which has been looking to lower costs, announced a tie-up with Changan Automobile last week. Battery swapping allows drivers to replace depleted packs quickly with fully charged packs, rather than plugging the vehicle into a charging point. Geely and Nio will adopt...

OPINION | Become an optimism activist says Catherine Wijnberg
“Optimism is contagious” A talk by Bronwyn Williams, author of A Roadmap to Rescue our Republic reminded me of the importance of optimism. Optimism is the feeling of hope and confidence about the future and a belief in its success. Optimism aligns to the energy of success – for us as individuals, for communities and countries. On a personal level, if we feel our future is bright we tend to invest in it by keeping healthy, educating ourselves, renovating our homes and generally laying the foundations for better times that are coming. In the same way, if we feel that our business future is bright, we invest in that too....
