Twitter has restored verification for several high-profile athletes despite previously warning that ‘blue ticks’ would disappear for any individual unwilling to pay for the privilege.
The social media firm said it would remove all legacy verified accounts last week in a bid to drive adoption of the premium Twitter Blue subscription service, which promises to verify users’ identity with a phone number.
Several sports stars with verified status, most notably National Basketball Association (NBA) player LeBron James, announced they would not be paying for Twitter Blue.
