There were several announcements with immediate relevancy to the sports industry. The first is that TVOS has been updated with ‘Insight’, a new feature that displays relevant information about the TV show or film on screen in a similar manner to Amazon’s X-Ray. For example, viewers can select an actor and view their background or filmography page, or they can add a song in the background to an Apple Music playlist.
The feature isn’t available for sport but it’s easy to see how this could be used to drive engagement through statistics, direct fans to ecommerce or ticketing platforms, and add additional value to commercial partnerships.
Indeed, one of the main reasons MLS was so willing to partner with Apple was because it believed the company’s ecosystem of devices and software, coupled with a highly engaged user base, would provide plenty of growth opportunities. A new feature in iOS demonstrates that faith in action. Tickets in Apple Wallet will now provide key event information such as location data, weather forecasts and details of in-seat catering. The artwork looks much nicer, too.
The Vision Pro has plenty of people within the sports industry excited given it will likely catalyse the market for virtual reality and immersive experiences. The headline announcement is that Apple is adding five-screen Multiview to the Apple TV app in VisionOS 2 – a move that will allow MLS Season Pass subscribers to make more of their subscription. Although Vision Pro remains a very niche product, it showcases its potential to rights holders and broadcasters considering bringing their services to the platform.
