Cost-cutting in South Africa’s private security sector could risk lives, warns SRG Security

As crime rates continue to challenge public safety across South Africa, the role of private security has become increasingly indispensable. However, Michael Bracale Jnr, Director of SRG Security, warns that the current trend of cost-cutting in the industry, while enticing to consumers, could lead to devastating consequences, undermining the very protection that clients rely upon.

The private security industry in South Africa is now one of the largest in the world, with over 2.7 million registered officers, according to the Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority (PSIRA), and approximately 556,000 of them actively serving. With private security personnel far outnumbering the 145,000 members of the South African Police Service (SAPS), it’s clear that private security has stepped in where public resources fall short.

Yet, the rapid growth of this sector over the past decade—an increase of 44%—has given rise to a disturbing trend: companies undercutting each other in a bid for market share, often at the expense of quality and reliability to the consumer.

“Cost-cutting in the security sector creates a ‘race to the bottom,'” Bracale explains, “where companies focus more on reducing prices than on delivering high-quality service. Consumers might be drawn to lower rates, but when it comes to safety, these ‘savings’ can end up costing much more than money—they can cost lives.”

According to Bracale, the true price of low-cost security services is often hidden until an emergency situation reveals the shortcomings. “A cheaper package may claim to offer the same benefits, like 24-hour armed response, but often lacks the support and resources of premium security providers. Low-cost providers may not hire proffesionally-trained personnel, have fewer response vehicles, or use outdated equipment—all factors that impact response time, preparedness, and effectiveness.”

He recounts a recent example in Cape Town, where a family experienced the limitations of a budget security provider. The family, attracted by a monthly saving of R290, switched to a lower-cost service. However, when they faced a violent threat outside their home, the response time was noticeably delayed. “Depending on inconsistent security services is a dangerous gamble,” Bracale says. “In those critical moments, the difference between a fully prepared team and a cut-rate provider becomes painfully clear.”

Premium security providers often make substantial investments in their teams and technology. This includes extensive training programs, regular emergency drills, and the latest equipment to support fast and effective responses. “A high-quality security provider doesn’t just send officers to your door—they send a team that has been rigorously trained, mentally prepared, and technologically equipped to handle any situation.”

Bracale highlights SRG Security’s approach, where officers undergo continuous training to hone response skills through simulated high-stakes scenarios, real-time decision-making exercises, and regular evaluations to maintain peak physical and mental readiness. “Our officers are prepared to respond quickly and de-escalate potentially dangerous situations,” he explains, “because we invest in their training and well-being.”

As the private security industry continues to grow, Bracale urges consumers to look beyond pricing and consider the unseen investments in quality and preparedness that companies provide. “When safety is on the line, making informed decisions is essential. Whether it’s rigorous training programs or advanced technology, these efforts guarantee that, when it matters most, you and your family are protected by a team of highly skilled, professionally trained, and fully prepared professionals.”
