LA 2028 Olympics opening ceremony to be held at two stadiums, Memorial Coliseum and SoFi 

The opening ceremony for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games will be jointly held in two stadiums for the first time in the event’s history.

he Memorial Coliseum becomes the first venue to host the opening ceremony at three Olympic Games, having performed the same role at the 1932 and 1984 Summer Olympics, which were also held in Los Angeles. The stadium is set to stage the track and field competitions during the first week of the 2028 Olympics, with US$100 million worth of upgrades to be made to the venue ahead of the Games.

Meanwhile, SoFi Stadium, home of the National Football League’s (NFL) Los Angeles Rams and the Los Angeles Chargers, will host the swimming competitions during the second week of the Olympics.

“The venues selected for the 2028 opening and closing Ceremonies will highlight Los Angeles’s rich sporting history and cutting-edge future, showcasing the very best that LA has to offer on the world stage,” said Casey Wasserman, LA28 chairperson and president.

“These two extraordinary venues will create an unforgettable experience, welcoming fans from across the globe to an Olympic and Paralympic Games like never before and concluding what will go down as one of the most incredible Games in history.” 

Additional information on how the two venues will be used for the opening ceremony, and what format the event will assume, will be revealed at a later date.
