The Transformational Duo: The Brave Code & Ladders and Trampolines writes Musa Kalenga

Dear Friends, Innovators & Leaders,

As the year begins, I always return to one simple question:

What mindset will I choose to lead with this year?

For me, that reflection often starts with two books that have shaped not only my thinking, but my work, my leadership, and my view of progress in Africa and beyond — Ladders & Trampolines and Brave Code.

They are very different books.
But together, they offer a powerful way to frame the year ahead.

Ladders & Trampolines reminds us that not everyone starts from the same place. Some climb carefully constructed ladders. Others rely on trampolines — moments of opportunity, support, or bold leaps that change the trajectory of their lives. The book challenges us to ask not just how far we’ve climbed, but what systems we’re building for others to rise.

Brave Code, on the other hand, is a call to action. It’s about the courage required to lead in uncertain times. The bravery to question outdated rules. The willingness to rewrite the code — in business, in creativity, in leadership — when the old one no longer serves us.

Together, these ideas feel especially relevant as we step into a year shaped by rapid technological change, AI acceleration, and shifting expectations of leadership.

This year won’t be won by playing it safe.
It will be won by leaders who understand both structure and leap.
Both discipline and imagination.
Both technology and humanity.

As I start the year, my intention is simple:
to keep building ladders where I can,
to keep jumping when it’s time,
and to always lead with brave code.

If you’re reflecting on your own leadership, your organisation, or the kind of impact you want to have this year, I hope these ideas travel with you too.

Here’s to a year of thoughtful climbs, bold leaps, and courageous leadership.

Warmly,

Musa Kalenga
