Netflix has increased their subscription prices in the UK effective immediately, with all three tiers seeing a rise. The cheapest Standard with ads plan has been upped from £5.99 per month to £7.99; Standard (ie with no ads) is now £13.99, up from £12.99; and Premium tier has risen from £18.99 per month to £20.99.
The streaming giant said in a statement that the increases “reflect improvements to our wide range of entertainment and the quality of our service”.
“Our approach remains the same: we continue offering a range of prices and plans to meet a variety of needs, and as we deliver more value to our members, we reinvest in quality entertainment and improve their experience by updating our prices,” the statement continued. “We know members have never had more choices in entertainment, and we’re committed to delivering an experience that meets and exceeds their expectations.”
Reacting to the hikes, Max Beckett, Uswitch broadband expert, commented: “Netflix has put up its UK prices again – its second rise in under two years. If you’re on the cheapest ad-supported plan, it’s a hefty jump [at more than 33 per cent].”
“New sign-ups pay the higher price straight away, while existing members will see it on an upcoming bill – Netflix typically emails around a month before it kicks in, so keep an eye on your inbox. And if Netflix comes bundled with your broadband or TV package, don’t assume you’ve dodged it, as providers tend to pass these rises on at their next price review. The good news is that if you pay Netflix directly, you’re not locked in. If the new price doesn’t feel worth it, you can downgrade or cancel penalty-free at any time – dropping from Standard to the ad-supported plan now saves £6 a month, or £72 a year, if you can live with the adverts.”
“Free services like ITVX, Channel 4 and Tubi cost nothing at all. It’s also a good moment to add up what you spend on streaming and broadband together, and check whether a better bundle could cut the total,” concluded Beckett.
