English Premier League is considering the idea of direct-to-consumer [DTC] over selling broadcasting rights in select markets.
Richard Masters, the league says after flirting with the idea in 2019, now the league is confident that they can pull off in some territories where their broadcast rights haven’t been sold. He was addressing the media ahead of the new Premier League season.
“We have sold all of our international rights to third parties. In other words, we’ve licensed them as opposed to going direct to the consumer,” said Masters.
“However, we do have – and I can’t reveal where in the world – options to do various things. We’ve probably signed more long-term partnerships than usual – six-year agreements instead of three-year agreements – and there are options in some of those agreements to go direct to consumer in the name of the Premier League.”
Unfortunately, the league chief was not forthcoming with the dates on when they would like to pilot the project of the DTO option however, he has stated that the idea is very appealing to the Premier League.
Such moves and considerations are likely to happen, because of the power of the internet… today the internet is the middleman, unlike back in the days when institutions were the gatekeepers.
Anyone can start a business today and sell directly to the consumer without any hustle or frictions, that’s true liberation and market decentralisation.
