The people of Britain through the Conservatives have spoken as they chose Liz Truss as United Kingdom’s new Prime Minister. Truss takes over from Boris Johnson who was forced out after three tumultuous years in power at 10 Downing Street.
She’s the third woman to lead the United Kingdom after Margaret Thatcher and Theresa May, they pave the way for her.
As part of the British tradition, Truss met with Queen Elizabeth at Buckingham Palace and she was asked to form a government.
“Ms Truss accepted Her Majesty’s offer and kissed hands upon her appointment as Prime Minister and First Lord of the Treasury,” Buckingham Palace said in a statement.
The Tories have been enjoying power for some time now as Truss is the fourth Conservative prime minister to lead the country in six years.
The 47 years old [Truss] rose to power after defeating her fellow party member and rival Rishi Sunak in a vote of Conservative Party members by a thin margin.
Johnson gave a farewell speech on Tuesday at 10 Downing Street to the people of the United Kingdom as he bows out from British politics. He emphasised that the British people should rally and support Truss and her programmes.
“This is it folks. What I say to my fellow Conservatives, it’s time for politics to be over, folks. It’s time for us all to get behind Liz Truss and her team and her programme.”
Truth be told, is not going to be easy for the new Prime Minister as she faces a lot of economic challenges, soaring energy bills, a looming recession, industrial strife and job losses caused by the covid-19 pandemic.
