A large-scale digital rollout targeting rural schools across South Africa is already underway, with 1 200 young people employed nationwide as part of an ambitious effort to expand access to technology and connectivity in underserved communities.
The National Teq ICT Innovation Programme, funded by Pexcor Digital Transformation and implemented by Mswenko Projects, is introducing fully equipped computer centres, ICT learning systems, and unlimited Wi-Fi access to schools across all nine provinces.
The initiative stands out for combining immediate job creation with infrastructure delivery, placing young people at the centre of implementation through roles in technical support, administration, planning, and system monitoring.
With connectivity increasingly linked to access to education and economic opportunity, the rollout brings always-on internet access to rural schools that have historically operated without reliable digital resources. The programme is designed to modernise learning environments while equipping communities with the tools needed to participate in a rapidly evolving digital economy.
Already active on the ground, the five-year initiative signals a shift from small-scale pilot projects to nationwide execution, with measurable impact in both employment and education access.
The programme will be officially launched on 25 July 2026 at Mananga Sports Ground in Nkomazi, Mpumalanga, marking a key milestone in South Africa’s push to close the digital divide and expand opportunity beyond urban centres.
