Innovation: MLS uses AI to translate commentary in real time

Major League Soccer (MLS) will broadcast a live match from its developmental league in four different languages using artificial intelligence (AI).

Camb.AI, one of the 2024 intake, will use its AI dubbing platform to instantly translate English language commentary, whilst maintaining the original speaker’s voice and tone, into French, Spanish and Portuguese.

MLS says this is the first time a live sporting event has ever been broadcast simultaneously in multiple languages using AI tech.

Other MLS Innovation Lab members will use the game to test their wares. Fitogether will provide tech-infused vests to all players on both teams to demonstrate how its hybrid GPS video system can provide analytical capabilities to youth soccer, while Stadium US will use its 5G-powered AI camera to offer a live stream and automated broadcast of the match.

“Soccer is a global game, as illustrated by the players and teams who will be competing at Generation Adidas Cup, as well as in our MLS ecosystem every day, so it is fitting that we are able to offer this MLS Next Pro match broadcast in multiple international languages,” said Chris Schlosser, senior vice president of emerging ventures, MLS.

“MLS Next Pro is a league of innovation and this is yet another example of the league’s ability to test cutting-edge technologies.”

MLS has also launched a short film captured in a new ‘immersive’ 8K 3D video format designed for the Apple Vision Pro mixed reality headset. The five-minute film focuses on the 2023 MLS playoffs, blending match action with behind-the-scenes footage, offering viewers a 180-degree viewing angle.
