The introduction of Lenacapavir offers a more convenient approach to HIV prevention, with patients requiring injections only every six months following the initiation phase. The injection itself is provided at no cost, with patients only paying an administration processing fee based on the Witkoppen service they access.
Access to the medication has been guided by the Department of Health, with priority groups including pregnant and postnatal women, adolescent girls and young women aged 15 to 24 years, and key populations such as MSM, PWID and FSW.
Witkoppen Clinic noted that stock is currently limited and that the rollout is being implemented in line with national guidance to ensure that those at higher risk of HIV infection are able to benefit from the new prevention option.
The availability of Lenacapavir represents a significant advancement in HIV prevention efforts. Long-acting injectable medicines have the potential to improve adherence and offer greater convenience compared with daily oral prevention methods, helping to reduce new HIV infections and strengthen public health outcomes.
