Petrol price will decrease from Wednesday

The Department of Energy has published the latest fuel price adjustments for May 2021, showing a slight decrease for both petrol and diesel.

The following changes will take effect from Wednesday, 5 May 2021:

  • Petrol 95:  decrease of 9 cents per litre;
  • Petrol 93: decrease of 9 cents per litre;
  • Diesel 0.05%:  decrease of 31 cents per litre;
  • Diesel 0.005%: decrease of 30 cents per litre;
  • Illuminating Paraffin: decrease of 23 cents per litre.

The movement in prices is typically affected by two main factors – international petroleum costs, and the movement in the rand/dollar exchange rate.

The average international product prices for petrol and illuminating paraffin increased whilst diesel decreased during the period under review, the department said.

“The rand appreciated against the US dollar during the period under review, on average, when compared to the previous period.

“The average rand/US dollar exchange rate for the period 31 March 2021 to 29 April 2021 was 14.4480 compared to 14.9829 during the previous period. This led to a lower contribution to the Basic Fuel Prices on petrol, diesel and illuminating paraffin by 26.31 c/l, 24.10 c/l and 23.58 c/l respectively.”

This is how the decreases will reflect at the pumps:
