Opinion | What I learnt Streaming my podcast LIVE on TikTok writes Paulo Dias

I have never seen a platform scare people over 23 years old more than Tik Tok. But give it a chance and you will find a perfect hybrid of Youtube, Spotify, Apple podcasts, Twitter and Instagram. It really is that robust.

I’m a co-host on the MKT Show through the course of the African Cup of Nations. We produced and hosted a special series of live event based podcasts on Tik Tok. Here’s what we learnt.

Promo. Promo. Promo.

Our LIVE podcasts were long – 3 hours long!!! But we promoted the hell out of each episode mainly to get people onto the stream but mostly to ‘’feed the feeds’’ with fresh regular content – even if they never converted to the LIVE.

Not all Tik Tok Lives need to look like they’re from your bedroom.

Look how awesome our show looked. Vision mixing, titles, ads breaks. Looked as good as a tv show – not a pile of dirty laundry in sight.

The audience is really appreciative and engage longer than you expect.

Very few of our regular podcast listeners followed through to the live streams so it was essentially a brand new audience from all over Africa.

Not only did people stay on the live show longer than the Tik Tok average, they commented, chatted and gifted us (which is a huge thing on Tik Tok). Plus we started seeing Live watchers start consuming the normal podcast content.

You don’t have to dance to be popular.

We’re very narrow minded when we think of Tik Tok. That it’s only one kind of thing. Remember when no one paid attention to the internet because it was just cat memes? Yeah. Let’s open our minds.

A Tik Tok podcast is like no other podcast.

There is a whole new audience waiting for your content, but don’t do it like you always do. If you’re going to hop onto Tik Tok – give people there what they want – not what works elsewhere.
