Netflix has announced that the price for two of their four main subscription packages on offer in South Africa will be subject to a 14% increase. The new development for price increase start immediately.
Stating from Tuesday 19 October, people with both Standard and Premium accounts will be asked to pay more on a monthly basis. Those with Mobile and Basic packages will continue to pay the same fees, however.
Here are the new payment schedules for Netflix SA:
- Mobile: R49 per month – COSTS STAY THE SAME.
- Basic: R99 per month – COSTS STAY THE SAME.
- Standard: R159 per month – UP FROM R139.
- Premium: R199 per month – UP FROM R169.
In defence of Netflix SA, this is the first price hike they’ve introduced in five years that is not related to the ZAR/USD exchange rate.
During their five years of operation on our shores, they have resisted the temptation to increase costs, adds Netflix SA.
The spokesperson says that the increase is done “to reflect improvements to our catalogue of movies and shows and the quality of our service – and, most importantly, so that we can continue giving our members in South Africa more options and continuously increasing value.”
The payment changes will be immediate for any new customers signing up to the streaming services, whereas existing clients will be notified ‘one month ahead of their next bill’, before any alterations are made.
